About

Hello and welcome!

I have been interested in cooking (and eating) since I was a little tot. My passion grew when I realized, I could create things my family and friends would enjoy. To me, there is no better way to tell someone you love them, then to create a delicious meal for them.

At age 5, I was standing on a step stool, waiting for my mom to pass the spatula so that I could mix the banana bread batter. At the age of 12, I was watching Emeril Live instead of MTV (or whatever it is that pre-teens watched in the early 2000’s). For my 16th birthday, I asked for something unexpected (no, not a car). I got the best gift ever; my very first Kitchen Aid stand mixer! My passion for cooking took a bit of a hiatus while in graduate school. But now my kitchen is back in full swing!

If there is one thing I have learned, it is that food truly does bring people together. I mean, we do all have to eat; why not eat something delicious surrounded by the people you love most!

Not everyone has the ability to eat delicious things with their families. Millions do not have enough to eat, each day. I strive to bring awareness to this horrible reality that many face in our own country.

On my site you will find the yummy treats, the savory bites and everything else that is created in my kitchen. I am Muslim, so no bacon here!

I hope to write and publish my own cookbook to share the extra special recipes from my childhood. To me, I can only honor these recipes in a printed, hardcover, bright and beautiful book πŸ™‚

Please feel free to comment, make suggestions for recipes you would like to see and share my recipes with friends.

  3. Assalamu’alaykum. Greetings from Indonesia! I’m so excited to see a muslimah contestant on MCUSA. 4. Salam Sr. Amanda,

I hope you are well isA. My friend told me that she saw you on MasterChef this week. She thought you were amazing. It is admirable that as a hijabi Muslim you were able to not only follow your passion but to not let your hijab hold you back. May Allah reward you for this and make it easier on others to follow their dreams.

I am one of the organizers of HijabFest. This is an annual event where we bring together women to celebrate the beauty of hijab. This year it will be on September 13th in New Brunswick, NJ. We have designers that showcase their modest wear in a fashion show. And there are inspirational speakers that talk about their journey. We would love to have you attend. Are you interested? If so, please send us an email at info@hijabfest.org or saadianazmalik@gmail.com.

You can check us on out FB http://www.facebook.com/hijabfestorg. Hope to hear back from you.

  5. I truly admire you!! I love all your recipes! I have a passion for cooking, but not to your level yet. I cannot bake. πŸ™ but Allhamdullilah. Just wanted to let you know that I am so proud to see a muslimah doing big things out there to let our voices heard, such as being a contestant. For me you are already a winner for standing out there with hijab! much hugs and best of luck in the show!!

    1. Thank you so much, Carmen! I appreciate your kind words! I am sure you can bake, maybe with some practice πŸ˜‰ start with simple recipes and go from there.. inshallah you will learn to bake!
      Best,

  6. Assalamu aleykum sister Amanda,
My name is Gulchehra Hoja, I’m a broadcaster for Uyghur Service at Radio Free Asia. We are located in Washington DC. We broadcast to nine different countries including to Xinjiang, China the home of Uyghur people. Majority of my people are Muslims, but the country is not. Uyghur people are suffering a tremendous pressure from the Chinese government when it comes to exercising their religion – Islam. In my country being a Muslim woman, wearing hijab and follow your passion became impossible, even dangerous and can get you thrown in prison.
Learning about you inspired me and I am sure many other Muslimas all over the world.
I would like to share “Muslimah Master Chef” story with my audience. Can I interview you and share your experience with Uyghur sisters? Please let me know. I believe you and your story can make a positive impact on Uyghur sisters lives!

    Thank you in advance

  7. As salamu alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatu! InshAllah you will be successful in all the ways that are good for you! Thank you for holding fast to your values in spite of that not being the societal norm. InshAllah you Ramadhan will be blessed and tasty!

  15. Amanda- I was rooting for you since day one and I was really hoping that you would win. I am an orthodox Jew and seeing you cook the way that you do, with style, with confidence and with love was truly inspiring. I loved watching you show your heritage, culture and talents in a way that is so similar to my own. What’s more- I was truly inspired by the kindness in which you acted and showed to the other contestants. Seeing you cook in your hijab with confidence and with pride was amazing and reminded me of how a true daughter of God holds herself. We may be from different religions but I see so many similarities right here. Good luck- I can’t wait to see what else you have in store!

  28. Dear Amanda, I loved you on Master Chef. I had to wipe away tears while watching your departure. You are an absolute sweetheart and deserved to go farther.

I loved how you proudly wore your Hijab. As a non practicing Catholic I find my myself disillusioned at spirituality as it sometimes divides instead of bringing people together. You inspired me. Your faith shows proudly as a goal to make you a better person in life. You are a star.

Is there any future plans to share your gift of cooking in a restaurant? I live in Vancouver BC and travel to Seattle often. Would love to taste what your lucky husband get to eat every day.

    Best wishes and continued success!!
